Tips for Pilling a Cat

By June Campbell of Nightcats Multimedia Productions

1. Take Charge. Pilling a cat is a skill that can be learned with practice, according to Joan McKnight, the owner of McRaggz Ragdolls. As a breeder, McKnight shares her home with 8-20 felines and she has had considerable experience giving medication. "If you have a house full of cats and one has a contagious disease, you'll learn how to give a pill," she remarked. "Remember that you are bigger than the cat. You have to be the boss. Straddle the cat. Grasp the scruff of his neck and pull his neck up. Then pop the pill down in the mouth as far as you can and rub the throat. When his little tongue comes out to lick his lips, you know the pill is swallowed and you let him go."

2. Better With Butter? "Once in awhile you get a cat that you can fool. When one of my cats was a problem, I dipped the pill in a little butter and she never caught on, " McKnight confessed.

3. Stand Tall. Place the cat on a table or counter. Stand over him or her so you are in a superior position. "You have to show the cat that you are the dominant one. If necessary, wrap a towel around him to restrict movement," advised Dr. Leishman.

4. Establish a Routine. Giving the pill at the same time of day will help you to remember. The most important thing is to give the medication according to the schedule that is prescribed. "But the cat will also learn to anticipate the time and he or she might start hiding from you," said Dr. Webster. "Try to give it at a time of day when the animal is most receptive. For example, it might be best to give medication just before feeding time when the animal is more likely to be 'in your face'".

5. Battle-Free Zone. Both you and the cat will be happier if you can avoid turning pill time into a battle zone. Although cats are less receptive to rewards than dogs, offer affection and attention. "If the cat is food motivated, you could offer a treat afterwards. But not all cats will stick around for this. When I pill my cat, as soon as the pill is down her throat, she doesn't want anything to do with me. She's out of the room," said Dr. Webster.

6. Be Cool. If your pet is to receive a bad-tasting liquid medication, try refrigerating it first. We know that with humans, an unpleasant taste is more palatable if it is cold. "We don't know for sure that it is true for cats, but it is worth a try, suggested Dave Wilson. Before refrigerating, you will need to be sure that the medicine will remain stable if it is chilled and will still be suitable for use. Some preparations are made with an oil base and will become too thick if refrigerated.

7. Use a Pill Gun. Pill Guns, sold at many animal hospitals and pet stores, are small devises that use a plunger to "shoot" a pill into the cat's mouth. Some cat owners find them an effective aid in administering medication.

8. Compound It. If all else fails, ask your veterinarian to consult with a compounding pharmacy. They might be able to compound a medication that will elicit a "Meow" of approval.
