Tip for Moving Day

By June Campbell of Nightcats Multimedia Productions

Getting ready to move? I don't know of any way to make moving day fun, but I do have a great tip that will take away at least some of the headache.

Yesterday I assisted a local store owner pack her inventory in readiness for the movers to pick up. She is moving her storefront to a different location. This woman has a system that's worth passing along.

This is a good tip for anyone who is moving, regardless of whether it's a personal move or a business or store re-location.

You will need boxes for packing, pens or markers, clear packing tape and several roles of packing tape in various colors.

Here is the system:

1. Pack boxes according to location. For example, your box may contain kitchen items, bedroom item, garage items, basement items, etc.

2. Assign each box a number. Using the marker, writer the number on the box top and on three or four sides.

3. On a separate paper, list the general contents of each box, by number. When you are unpacking, you can refer to this record to rescue your coffee maker first, or to find whatever item you can't live without.

4. Using the colored tapes, attach a strip of tape to each box. The colors represent the destination. For example, blue might indicate the garage, red the basement, green the bedroom, etc.

Movers find it easier to work with color coded boxes than to read text written on boxes, so its more likely that your boxes will end up in the spot you want them to be in. Additionally, your numbering system makes it easier for you to find the particular items you want to unpack first.

I definitely organize boxes by room and label them on all sides. I like the color coding though, that does sound quick and easy.

The color coding helped immensely I was surprised myself. Thanks for posting a comment.

I've been using the number/list system for 20 years now and it certainly comes in handy when you're looking for that one item you need. I like the coloured tape. Will try and incorporate that next time.
