Parchment Craft: An Elegant Paper Craft Technique
By June Campbell of Nightcats Multimedia Productions
Parchment craft is an intricate, elegant technique used to produce beautiful, delicate images for card making, wall hangings, scrapbook embellishments or to decorate other items. The History of Parchment Craft The craft has been around in various forms since before the invention of the printing press. It originated in Europe, where it appeared most often in religious imagery. In time, parchment craft spread to South American countries, thanks to European colonization. In 1987, two South American women, Martha Ospina and Tiemen Venema moved to the Netherlands and founded the Pergamano company with the hopes of introducing this lovely craft to international audiences and of making the tools widely available. Today, parchment craft is more prominent in Europe and South America, but it is beginning to attract the attention of North American artisans as well. The Pergamano company is now know as Pergamano International. Although this is not the only company promoting parchment craft, it is arguably the best known to North Americans. Parchment Craft Tools and Techniques Although many, many tools are available for parchment craft, the beginner can easily get by with four or five. 1. Tinta Ink and a Tracing Pen. Parchment crafters typically trace their patterns onto vellum or parchment craft using a special ink and a tracing pen. 2. An Embossing Tool. The crafter applies the embossing tool to the back of the pattern, creating a raised effect in varying shades of white and gray. 3. A Perforator or Stippling Tool. This pen-shaped tool has a sharp point. When used lightly on the back of the pattern, the tool creates raised dots on the front. When used firmly, the perforator cuts through the parchment paper, freeing the perforated part from the rest of the paper. 4. Paints, dyes or crayons to add colors to the finished project.
