Make a "5 Things I Love About You" Valentine

By June Campbell of Nightcats Multiedia Production

How delighted will your special Valentine be to receive this cute little hand-made mini book for Valentine’s Day?

The Five Things I Love About You book takes two or three hours to make, costs very little and is sure to bring a smile to the face of the lucky recipient. You make the book’s pages out of coin envelopes, decorate the cover with a Valentine theme, and then make five tags to slip into the open ends of the coin envelopes.

Coin envelopes are sold in boxes at office supply stores such as Staples. They are usually brown in color, but the color does not matter.

Before giving the mini book to your sweetie, you add your special message of love on each tag. Each message lists something you love about the person who will receive it.

Here are the supplies you will need:

Scrapbook paper, suitable for Valentine’s Day
Card stock, pink or red or other color to match the scrapbook paper
Chipboard, book board, light cardboard, or similar material to make stronger covers
Computer generated text
Ribbon
Brads, eyelets or buttons
Glue or Adhesive
5 coin envelopes
Trim or embellishment as desired

Equipment

Scissors or Cutting Tool
Ruler
Punch for making small hole in the covers
Eyelet Setter, optional

To Assemble

For those who prefer written instructions, this is how to proceed. First, you cut two “covers” out of chipboard or similar. A cereal box is a good source of light cardboard if you don't have chipboard available. The covers should be slightly larger all around than the coin envelopes.

Use scrapbook paper and card stock to cover the fronts of the two covers. Wrap the paper around the covers and glue them down on the inside, ensuring that the edges are covered.

Decorate the cover as shown in the picture below, or use your own creativity to come up with something unique.

Using a punch, punch a small hole in the middle of each short, outer end. If desired, set an eyelet in the hole that you punched. Later, you will string ribbon through this punched hole to tie the book closed.

Take the five coin envelopes and cut the flaps off each one. Glue the envelopes together along the bottom edge so they fan open as a book does.

Glue the first and last coin envelope to the inside of the front and back cover. You now have your mini book.

Make five tags out of card stock, sized to fit in the coin envelope pages. Decorate the tags as desired, leaving space to write your message.

String the ribbon through the holes in the front and back cover and tie in a bow.

And that is it. You have made a lovely little Valentine craft project, a gift that is suitable for a child or adult.

Happy Valentine’s Day.

Contributor's Note

June Campbell designed this project for a crafting workshop for eight-year-olds. They did very well at the workshop. Even better, most of these kids wrote their special messages immediately and gave the book to their moms when the moms came to collect them. We had some very happy people that day.
