How to do Iris Folding
By June Campbell of Nightcats Multimedia Productions
Iris Folding is a paper arts technique used in card making, scrapbooking, in altered books and other paper craft projects. Projects made with iris folding can be fun and whimsical, pop and trendy or elegant and stylish. The technique originated in Holland but has spread to other countries as people became aware of this simple yet eye appealing technique. Although iris folding looks complex, it is surprisingly easy to do. Essentially, the artisan arranges strips of folded paper to create a design. An iris , which represents the iris of an eye or a camera, forms in the middle. The iris can be filled with paper of a contrasting color, or can be filled with beads, glitter, jewels or so other decorative element. If the iris folding project is to be used for a scrapbook, placing a small photograph or image in the iris creates an interesting effect. Iris folding is done with a pattern. Pattern books are available at Amazon and other booksellers, and free patterns can usually be found online by simply googling "free iris pattern". Originally, iris folders in Holland used the insides of envelopes for their papers. Today, the most popular papers to use in iris folding projects are usually papers that are not too heavy -- scrapbook paper, origami paper, vellum, tissue, gift wrap, or even ribbon. Card stock is usually too heavy and creates too much bulk. This link contains a video demonstration of iris folding .
