Could you Benefit from the Raw Food Detox Diet?

By June Campbell

Is the raw food diet a good way to detoxify, cleanse and eliminate toxins from your body? Should you try it? What are the negatives, if any?

If those are the questions you’ve been asking yourself, you will find some answers here.

How do you Explain Raw Foodism?

Raw foodism is a philosophic belief. It holds that we remove the essential nutrients from food when we cook it or process it. People who adhere to this philosophy are known as raw foodists.

A traditional raw food diet is comprised primarily of fruits, seeds and vegetables. There are variations within the raw foodists camp. Some eat nothing but fruits, seeds and grains. They are said to follow a fruitarian diet .

Some raw foodists ingest raw meat but others eat no meat and are vegetarian or vegan. Still others may eat limited quantities of cooked meat. However, purists argue that this detracts from the raw food diet’s many benefits.

How Does a Raw Food Diet Assist with the Detoxification?

Raw foodists point out that the original human diet, stemming back to the time of the cavemen, was a raw diet. For millennia, humans ate nothing but raw food. Our bodies evolved to consume raw food. The concept of cooking food and using recipes is a modern invention, and one that is not to our benefit.

Many of our illnesses and undesirable health conditions, they argue, stem from this adaptation in our food preparation. By returning back to the diet of our prehistoric ancestors, we will eliminate or cure many diseases. Not only that, there are numerous additional health benefits to the raw food diet.

However, some disagree with eating raw food as a detox diet. They insist that the very notion that a simple diet can detoxify a body in a short time is a fallacy, although one that our media loves to perpetuate. Since most detoxification diets last only a week, it is a mistake to think that you can undo years of harm in seven days. If you feel better after a week, they say, you are experiencing a psychological benefit. To access the true health benefits, you need to eat a raw food diet as a permanent way of life.

Elaborating Upon the Raw Food Detox Diet

The original Raw Food Detox Diet is a book written Natalia Rose, a nutritionist.

In her book, Rose takes you through a number of “levels” as you adapt gradually to the raw food diet. Those who make a sudden, drastic change in their diet by going from cooked food to raw food in one day are courting failure. While some may succeed, the failure rate from this approach is high.

Instead, Rose advocates making a series of small adaptations in your food intake, spread out over a period of time. She gradually introduces raw food through five progressive levels.

In the beginning, which is level five, three quarters of your daily diet consists of raw food. However, you do eat one meal a day of cooked foods. By the time you reach level one, you are eating one hundred per cent raw foods.

According to Rose, you will receive health benefits from implementing even a few changes in your diet. Even if you only have one raw food meal a day – perhaps a smoothie for breakfast – you will benefit. Optimal benefits go to those who are eating only raw foods.

Rose’s book, the Raw Food Detox Diet, also includes some recipes. Her recipes include smoothies, salads, salad dressing and recipes for vegans.

If you are new to raw food diets, Rose’s book is a good way to introduce yourself to the subject.

It is not a particularly good choice for an experienced raw foodist or for anyone looking into a one hundred percent raw food diet, or for anyone in need of new inspiration.

This information looks great, June, but I'm not sure this old farm boy can give up meat and potatoes. It certainly seems to have benefits, even with some compliance.
Thank you for sharing.
Best wishes.

I personally do not follow a raw food diet. I think it has benefit but I probably would not have the will power to stay on it for long. Thanks for commenting. (I have a farming background also).

Not sure I`d fancy raw meat.

Nope. Nor would I. Thanks for commenting.

Gosh June, I dunno... There are so many of these "fad" diets out there. I know that raw veggies are good for you. I know that fruits are good for you. But everything raw? Ehhhhh, I don't know.... Ya gotta be careful about this stuff.

I agree. You need to use common sense. As for the raw food diet, I am neither endorsing or opposing. I'm just explaining what it is.

Hi June,
Not sure I would adopt a diet with all raw food. As a periodic cleansing diet it might be a different story. I have a friend who was anemic and he had to eat raw liver sandwiches. I guess then it would all depend on circumstances.

Wishing you all the best.

Raw liver sandwiches? I'd try just about anything before that! LOL Thanks for commenting.

I can definitely see an argument for increasing the number of raw foods eaten. But, I just love warm food so...
