5 Ideas for Creating Art from Recycled Objects

By June Campbell of Nightcats Multimedia Productions

Why not create art from recycled objects?

When you make altered art using "found objects", ephemera and other recycled items, you are utilizing your creative skills in an environmentally friendly way, not to mention the economical benefits you realize when you create from the old rather than purchasing the new.

Here are a few suggestions to get you started:

1. Make Altered Books

Discover the currently popular art form known as "altered books." You simply locate an abandoned book (being sure it has a sturdy spine) and do something to it to create altered art.

You could draw or paint over pages, glue pages together, cut the entire book into a shape, create a book sculpture, carve niches to hide treasures or anything else that comes to mind. For additional information about making altered books, see the image below or refer to this web site: Altered Book: Cyber Home for the Altered Book Artist

2. Make a Mini Album from old CDs

Collect six or seven old CDs (let your friends know you need some. Everyone has a few old CDs they intend to throw out.) Cover them with papers or paint them, then bind together using card stock "spines." Decorate festively or as desired. You can use this project as a mini scrapbook or as a work of altered art -- or both. For more information about making a CD Album, refer to the picture below or check out this web page: Scrapping by Design's CD Album Video

3. Make a Pendant from an Optical Lens

Have one or more of those old optical lenses tucked away in a drawer? It's easy to make an attractive pendant using papers, collage art, paint, glitter or any other medium you like. Use a velvet cord to turn your art into a necklace, or visit a bead store to purchase a chain and hoop ring. See the picture below or refer to Scrapping by Design's Optical Lens Pendant

4. Create Tags and Embellishments from Formica Chips

Formica chips, usually given away for free in home improvement depots, made great tags that can stand alone as examples of altered art, or can be transformed into embellishments for altered books, scrapbooks, etc. Paint them, cover them with paper, stamp images with rubber stamps and ink -- or decorate in any way you want. Since they come with a convenient hole at the top, you can attach any ribbon, cord, fiber or string that you wish. See the picture below or visit Scrapping by Design's Altered Formica Chip Video

5. Make a Heritage Album from a Cigar Box

Old cigar boxes, often available from tobacco shops, make wonderful "box albums" to contain a heritage album or other mementoes. Paint, papers, card stock and miscellaneous trims work together to create a true work of art. See the photo below or refer to Scrapping by Design's Cigar Box Photo Album

There you have five projects may inspire you to create art from recycled objects. Your only limit is your imagination. You can create jewelry from pieces of CDs, make scrapbook and other embellishments from old earrings and other jewelry, make sculptures from children's board books, create attractive wall hangers from clipboards and much more.

Happy creating.
